Aftercare and follow-up at home

Your care does not end when you leave Istanbul. Here is how remote follow-up works, which symptoms need urgent attention and how to involve your own doctor at home.

Prof. Dr. Ateş Kadıoğlu

Before you fly

Leaving Istanbul prepared

At your final check-up the surgeon makes sure you are healing well and fit to travel. Before you leave, you receive:

  • Written aftercare instructions covering wound care, showering, activity and medication
  • Any medication you need for the first days at home
  • Direct contact details for our team
  • A summary of your operation, including the device used, to share with your own doctor

Keep your implant details safe. If you have an implant, keep the device information with your medical records. Any doctor treating you in future, including before other surgery, will need to know about it.

Remote follow-up

Follow-up by WhatsApp and video

Follow-up is arranged remotely, so you do not need to travel back for routine checks.

WhatsApp

Send questions and, if asked, photos of the wound. It is the quickest way to reach the team for day-to-day questions.

Video calls

Scheduled video calls let the surgeon check your progress, and teach or review how to use the implant pump if needed.

What to expect

The first weeks at home

Most men have mild pain and swelling that settle over one to two weeks. Every recovery is different, so follow your own instructions if they differ from this outline.

Read the week-by-week recovery guide

  1. Week 1

    Rest and wound care

Take your medication as prescribed and wear supportive underwear. The implant stays partly inflated until you are shown how to use the pump.

  2. Around 7–10 days

    Wound check

A review of healing, by video or with your local doctor.

  3. Weeks 4–6

    Intercourse

Usually allowed once the surgeon confirms healing.

  4. Weeks 6–12

    Later reviews

Further follow-up to check the device is working well and you are comfortable using it.

When to seek urgent help

Warning signs not to ignore

Contact us straight away and seek local medical care if you notice any of the following. Do not wait for your next scheduled check.

  • A fever or chills, or feeling generally unwell
  • Pain that is getting worse rather than better
  • Redness, heat or discharge from the wound
  • Swelling or bruising that keeps growing
  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Skin over the implant or pump that looks thin, dark or broken
  • Calf pain or swelling, chest pain or breathlessness

In an emergency, call your local emergency number (999 or 112 in the UK, 112 or 999 in Ireland, 911 in the USA) or go to the nearest emergency department, then let us know.

Your doctor at home

Working with your local GP or urologist

We recommend telling your GP, or your own urologist, that you are having treatment abroad, ideally before you travel. Share the operation summary with them when you return.

  • Your GP can check the wound, remove dressings and prescribe medication if needed
  • If a local doctor examines you, we are happy to share information with them, with your consent
  • Long-term, your implant should be recorded in your medical notes

Being far from your surgeon. Complications such as infection, erosion or a device fault can happen after any implant operation, sometimes months or years later. Some can be managed remotely or locally; others need further surgery. Discuss before you travel how any problem would be handled, and see revision surgery for what is involved.

Questions

Aftercare FAQ

All frequently asked questions

Do I need to come back to Istanbul for check-ups?

Routine follow-up is usually done by WhatsApp and video call. A return visit is only needed if the surgeon advises it.

Who removes my stitches?

The stitches used are usually dissolvable, so they do not need to be removed.

How quickly will someone reply to my message?

The team aims to reply promptly during the day. If you have warning signs, do not wait for a reply: seek local medical help.

Will my GP be willing to help?

Most GPs will check a wound or prescribe medication after surgery abroad. Telling them in advance and bringing your operation summary makes this easier.
