How to read the differences
All four manufacturers make devices that do the same basic job: they give a firm erection when you want one. The differences lie in materials, pump design, the way infection protection is built in, and the range of sizes and shapes available.
Infection protection
Coloplast and Boston Scientific take different approaches. Coloplast's hydrophilic coating soaks up an antibiotic solution the surgeon chooses in theatre, which allows the antibiotic to be tailored. Boston Scientific's InhibiZone is applied during manufacture with two fixed antibiotics, so it is not suitable for men allergic to them. Whatever the device, careful preparation, antibiotics and the non-touch technique described on our penile implants page are essential.
Expansion and sizing
Most inflatable cylinders expand in girth. The AMS 700 LGX also expands in length. Several brands offer narrower cylinders for smaller or scarred erection chambers, which can matter after prostate surgery, Peyronie's disease or a previous implant.
Three-piece or two-piece
Three-piece devices have a separate reservoir in the abdomen. The ZSI 475 combines pump and reservoir in the scrotum, which can help when placing an abdominal reservoir is difficult.
Track record
Coloplast and Boston Scientific devices have been in use for many years and have a large body of published research behind them. Rigicon and ZSI are newer or less widely used. That does not make them unsuitable, but it is a fair point to discuss with your surgeon.
Is one brand better?
No brand is better for every man. The most suitable device depends on your anatomy, previous surgery, allergies, hand dexterity and personal preferences, and on your surgeon's assessment. The surgical technique and aftercare matter at least as much as the device.

Coloplast Titan vs AMS 700
The Coloplast Titan and the Boston Scientific AMS 700 are the two devices men ask about most. Both have the same three parts. Two cylinders sit inside the erection chambers of the penis (the corpora cavernosa). A small pump sits in the scrotum. A reservoir of sterile saline is placed behind the abdominal wall.
Squeezing the pump moves fluid from the reservoir into the cylinders and produces an erection. Pressing the release area returns the fluid to the reservoir and the penis becomes soft again. Everything is inside the body, so neither device is visible from the outside.
An implant restores rigidity. It does not normally change sensation, orgasm, ejaculation or desire, and it does not add length. This is true of both devices.

Titan vs AMS 700: the differences explained
Cylinders and feel
The two cylinders are made differently. Some surgeons and patients describe differences in how the erect or flaccid penis feels, but these impressions are personal and depend on anatomy and sizing as much as on the device. There is no single "firmer" or "more natural" implant for every man.
Length expansion
The AMS 700 LGX is designed to expand in length as well as girth. This does not make the penis longer than your natural erect length; it may help some men use the full length available to them. Your surgeon will explain whether it is relevant in your case.
The pump
The Titan Touch deflates with a single press on the release area; the AMS 700 has a distinct deflation button. Some men prefer one design over the other. If your hand strength or dexterity is limited, tell your surgeon, because it can influence the choice.
Antibiotic protection
Infection is the most serious complication of implant surgery, so both manufacturers add an antibiotic strategy to the device. Risks with any brand
Every implant carries risks. These include infection, bleeding or haematoma, mechanical failure over time (for inflatable devices), erosion, and changes in how the penis looks or feels. An implant is a permanent change: if it is removed, other treatments for erectile dysfunction are unlikely to work. Results vary from person to person. If a problem occurs, revision surgery may be needed.
