Treatment in Turkey: your questions answered

Both refer to the same country. In 2022 the Turkish government asked international organisations to use its Turkish name, Türkiye, and the United Nations adopted it. In everyday English both names are still widely used, so you will see both on this website.

Istanbul has two large international airports with direct flights from many countries, a wide choice of private hospitals and many university-trained specialists. Our clinic is in Akasya Kent, Üsküdar, on the Asian side of the city, and our coordinators arrange all transport for you.

Istanbul receives millions of international visitors every year. As with any trip, check your own government's current travel advice before booking, for example the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office or the US Department of State. The safety of implant surgery depends far more on the surgeon, the hospital and the infection-prevention routine than on the country. Look for an experienced urologist who performs implant surgery regularly, a licensed private hospital, a genuine device from an established manufacturer and a clear follow-up plan. Like any operation, implant surgery carries risks wherever it is performed.

They can be. We use devices from the same manufacturers used in the UK, Europe and the USA: Coloplast, Boston Scientific (AMS 700), Rigicon and Zephyr Surgical Implants. The exact brand and model is named in your treatment plan. Compare them on our brand comparison page.

Ask for the full name of the surgeon who will operate, their specialty and the hospital. In Turkey, "Prof. Dr." and "Doç. Dr." (associate professor) are academic titles awarded through a national assessment, and university affiliations and published research can usually be looked up online, for example on PubMed. Be cautious if a website does not name its surgeon at all.

Yes. Under Turkish health tourism regulations, hospitals and intermediary companies serving international patients must hold an International Health Tourism Authorisation Certificate from the Ministry of Health. You are entitled to ask any clinic or agency about this.

Infection is one of the most important risks of implant surgery. We prepare you carefully, give intravenous antibiotics, use antibiotic-coated or antibiotic-impregnated devices and follow the non-touch technique, which keeps the implant away from the skin throughout the operation. After your final check-up, usually around day six for an implant. Long journeys raise the risk of blood clots, so walk regularly, drink plenty of water and follow your surgeon's advice on the flight home.

Inflatable implants contain very little metal and rarely trigger metal detectors. Some malleable implants have a metal core. Either way, keep your implant identification details with you in case you are asked.

Yes. Many men travel with a partner, relative or friend. Tell us early so the hotel and transfers can be arranged for both of you.

Most modern penile implants can be scanned safely under specific conditions. Always tell the radiology team you have an implant and show them the device details so they can check the manufacturer's guidance.

Contact us straight away. If you have warning signs such as fever, increasing pain, redness or discharge, also seek local medical care without delay. If a device wears out, it can be replaced in a revision operation.
