What is the AMS 700?
The AMS 700 is a three-piece inflatable penile implant made by Boston Scientific, a US medical device company. It has been used for many years to treat erectile dysfunction when other treatments have not worked or are unsuitable.

How it works
- Two cylinders are placed in the erection chambers of the penis.
- A pump in the scrotum is squeezed to fill the cylinders; a separate button deflates them.
- A reservoir of sterile saline sits behind the abdominal wall.
All parts are inside the body. When deflated, the penis is soft; when inflated, it becomes firm for as long as you choose.

Key features
InhibiZone antibiotic impregnation
InhibiZone is a Boston Scientific treatment in which the device is impregnated with two antibiotics, minocycline and rifampin, during manufacture. The antibiotics are released around the implant in the period after surgery. Because the antibiotics are fixed, InhibiZone is not suitable for men allergic to minocycline, rifampin or tetracyclines, so please tell us about any allergies.
Parylene coating
The cylinders have a Parylene coating, a thin layer intended to reduce wear and improve durability.
Multi-layer cylinders
The cylinders are built from several layers, including a fabric layer between silicone layers, which controls how they expand.
As with any device, the coating and materials are only part of the picture. Careful preparation, antibiotics and the non-touch technique, described on our penile implants page, are just as important.
Who may suit the AMS 700?
The AMS 700 may suit many men who want an inflatable implant, including after prostate surgery, with diabetes or with Peyronie's disease. The range of cylinder types gives the surgeon flexibility in more complex anatomy.

Surgery and recovery
The operation takes around 45–60 minutes under general or spinal anaesthesia, usually through one small incision. You stay in hospital for up to two nights and in Istanbul for about six days. Risks
Before you decide. Risks include infection, bleeding or haematoma, allergic reaction to the impregnated antibiotics, mechanical failure over time, erosion, movement of the pump or reservoir, and changes in how the penis looks or feels. An implant is a permanent change: if it is removed, other treatments for erectile dysfunction are unlikely to work. Results vary from person to person. If problems occur, revision surgery may be needed.

Questions about the AMS 700
What is the difference between the AMS 700 CX and LGX?
The CX cylinders expand in girth; the LGX cylinders expand in girth and length. Neither makes the penis longer than its natural erect length. Your surgeon explains which suits you.
Can I have InhibiZone if I am allergic to antibiotics?
Not if you are allergic to minocycline, rifampin or tetracyclines. In that case your surgeon will suggest a different device or coating.
Is the AMS 700 better than the Coloplast Titan?
Neither device is better for every man. Both are established inflatable implants, and the choice depends on your anatomy, history and preferences.
